Appliance Engineering Data & Duty Cycle Factors

Unlike resistive lamps, appliances with compressors or heating elements (such as refrigerators, air conditioners, water geysers, and irons) do not consume power at full rated wattage continuously. Thermostats disconnect heating coils when set temperatures are reached, and inverter compressors modulate motor speeds.

Effective Running Watts = Rated Wattage (W) × Duty Cycle Factor
Daily kWh (Units) = (Rated Watts × Duty Factor × Hours/Day × Quantity) ÷ 1000
Monthly kWh (Units) = Daily kWh × 30
Monthly Bill (₹) = Total Monthly Units × Tariff Rate (or State DISCOM Engine)

Household appliances are never operated simultaneously at 100% capacity. We apply the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) diversity factor:

Recommended Sanctioned Load (kW) = ⌈ (Highest Power Heavy Appliance + 0.30 × Other concurrent loads) × 1.25  (Safety Factor) ⌉

Example for a standard 2BHK flat (1 AC + 1 Geyser + Fans + Fridge): Recommended Sanctioned Meter Load is 3 kW or 4 kW.
